Oi, veja se não há nenhum problema com IRQs e afins, pois em algum momento
a(s) sua(s) interface(s) de rede estão com um comportamento estranho. Porém
não sei se isso acontece antes, durante/depois do load aumentar. Se você
trabalha em cluster e por algum motivo sua interface de rede apresente algum
comportamento anormal pode ser aí seu gargalo.

Uma outra coisa que você pode tentar é colocar o kernel do mainline que está
no 2.6.36, como o hardware teoricamente é confiável você pode apelar para
troca do kernel. No top que você mostrou não consegui ver o que consome CPU,
se você não consegue ver nenhum outro processo que ocupe tanto o tempo da
CPU provavelmente há algum conflito de acesso a memoria, irqs ( como
mencionei acima).
