Ou seja, é o IP sobre ethernet de sempre, que conhecemos há decadas.

O detalhe está em utilizar isso em cenários onde IP sobre PPPoE, IPoA, etc.
são comumente utilizados em lugar do IP sobre ethernet padrão.  E
evidentemente, os muitos serviços de rede que você coloca em cima para
QoS/shaping/accounting/etc.
