agora preciso de um cliente de ssh para continuar.

$ openssl s_client -connect eng.registro.br:443

funcionou. vem tanta coisa que não vale a pena repetir aqui.

infelizmente depois percebi que meu openssl usou o enderço v4. :-(
testando com o elinks, cujo comportamento é mais ortodoxo, a coisa 
enguiçou no https.
